What is WIC?

Updated June 29, 2026

WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. It is a free program that gives healthy food, help with feeding your baby, and support to families. It is paid for by the federal government, so it does not cost you anything.

Who is WIC for?

WIC is for people who are:

  • Pregnant
  • Recently had a baby
  • Breastfeeding
  • Caring for a baby or child under age 5

You also need to live in Louisiana and meet the income rules. If you already get SNAP, Medicaid, or TANF, you meet the income rules automatically.

What do you get?

  • Money on a card to buy healthy foods like milk, eggs, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and baby food
  • Help and tips for feeding your baby, including breastfeeding support
  • Checkups to make sure your child is growing well
  • Connections to other help in your area

How do you sign up?

You apply at a local WIC clinic. The clinic checks that you qualify, does a short health and nutrition check, and sets up your benefits. You can start the process online with the myWIC app, then visit a clinic.

Many families in Louisiana qualify but never sign up, often because they did not know about WIC. If you think you might qualify, it is worth a free call.
